At least four people were seriously injured on Friday night in Rotterdam after police opened fire on a crowd. Authorities defended the use of force, with the city’s mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb blaming the crowds for an “an orgy of violence”. Five police officers were injured and seven people were arrested in The Hague on Saturday night.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Belgium: About 35,000 people took part in demonstrations in Brussels, which began peacefully before violence broke out. Protesters wearing black hoods threw stones at police as they advanced with water cannon at the main junction in front of the EU Commission headquarters. Protesters also threw smoke bombs and fireworks. The country’s most vaccinated province, West Flanders, has one of the highest infection rates in the country. Last week the government tightened its coronavirus restrictions on the unvaccinated, mandating wider use of masks and enforcing work from home.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Austria: Thousands of protesters gathered in Vienna on Saturday after the Austrian government announced a nationwide lockdown to contain the quickly rising coronavirus infections in the country. The far-right opposition Freedom Party was among those who have called for the protest and vowed to combat the new restrictions.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Italy: Hundreds of protesters gathered in Rome’s Circo Massimo on Saturday to demonstrate against mandatory vaccinations and the use of the Green Pass, which is the proof of Covid-19 vaccination. A Green Pass certificate is required in Italy to be allowed in restaurants, museums, theaters, cinemas, gyms, swimming pools, festivals, and sports events.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Other: Thousands of demonstrators also took to the streets in Switzerland, Czechia and Croatia. Croatian protesters marched in Zagreb to show their anger at mandatory vaccinations for public sector workers.</li></ul>
